
On June 21, 2004 Julia and I went to the Mojave Airport, near her family's home in the hills above Tehachapi, for a unique chance to see the launch of SpaceShipOne, the first human spaceflight developed and funded entirely in the private sector. It was as reminiscent of a rave as a NASA-nerd event - thousands of people wandering around in the darkness, out in the desert, decked out in glow sticks and strobes, on one of the longest runways in the US.
